When the Russian spy scandal broke, I thought the name of Cambridge based spy Donald Heathfield sounded familiar. I just found his business card as he attended a Boston SCIP chapter meeting last year. He said that his company helped organizations map out future directions which was reasonable enough and vague enough for SCIP.
We CI folks are often accused of being corporate spies, but we research ethically:
- We identify ourselves honestly
- We ask for publicly available information, not confidential or proprietary data
- We basically put together pieces of secondary and primary information together to create a picture of the competitors.
It's often boring work, searching for details that help fill out the puzzle.
But at least, we can now tell a story about the real spy that attended a SCIP meeting.
