I’ve been watching the terrible situation in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama with great sadness for the people affected. The media asked the governors, “When will the levees be fixed? How many people have died? When will power and water be restored?” They politely answer, “We don’t know.” And they truly don’t know. The devastation is beyond their experience and knowledge.
I am reminded of the times in CI when I have been asked questions about the competitor’s reorganization, IT plans, new product pricing. I ask and get the same response: “I don’t know.” Yes, sometimes it’s a dodge to avoid answering the question, but often the decision has simply not been made. So the information is not there to be found. Many CI projects are snapshots of evolving situations. So the options are wait or go with incomplete information which depends on how critical the information is to the decision being made.
